Luna Display for Windows is Live on Kickstarter

An Update from Team Astropad

Dear friends and backers,

It’s been a while since we last checked in! We just launched our second Kickstarter campaign, so we thought we’d drop you a line. We first introduced Luna Display for Mac on Kickstarter in 2017 when we were a Mac-focused company. But over the years, our top user feedback has been for us to expand support to Windows. Here’s the latest on what we’ve been up to...

Our Journey to Windows

Going cross-platform has been a long-time goal for us, but we didn’t quite know where to start. From getting sherlocked by Apple, to conducting Windows market research, to hiring new engineers, we’ve had our work cut out for us. Since this has all been new territory, we’ve been documenting our journey to Windows on our blog.

Now Live on Kickstarter (And Nearly 1,000% Funded!)

Today, we’re thrilled to report that we’re just months away from shipping Luna Display and Astropad on Windows. Our current Kickstarter campaign has over 4,400 backers and is nearly 1000% funded. Because of our critical success last time around (thanks to you!) we knew coming back to the Kickstarter platform would be the best litmus test for our exciting new venture. And in just two weeks, we feel more confident than ever.

Here’s where you come in. Right now we’re offering a handful of backer tiers that may be relevant to your interests. From $30 off of our new HDMI or USB-C Luna hardware units to an Astropad swag pack full of stickers, a mug, accessory pouch, and screen cloth -- there are plenty of ways you can save big. Check out these offers here!

You may also have some questions regarding your current Luna hardware. We’ve addressed some commonly asked questions below...

Cross-Platform FAQs

WILL MY CURRENT USB-C LUNA UNIT (FOR MAC) WORK ON WINDOWS?

Yes, currentUSB-C Luna hardware units will work cross-platform once we officially roll out Windows support in May 2021.

WHAT ABOUT MY MINI DISPLAYPORT (mDP) LUNA HARDWARE UNIT?

Our mDP Luna units will only work on Macs.

WILL YOU BE UPDATING CURRENT MAC SOFTWARE, TOO?

Yes! Once we launch our major Windows software update, you’ll notice lower latency, better image quality, and even faster speeds. So even though our energy is focused on developing for Windows, both Mac and PC users will benefit.

We Wouldn’t Be Here Without You

Thank you again for your support throughout the years. Because of you, we’ve grown so much as a company. We’ve hired more team members, we’ve made our products better, and we’ve learned a lot. Astropad is a user-focused company and for that, we have you to thank.

Introducing Mac-to-Mac Mode in Luna Display
over 4 years ago – Wed, Nov 06, 2019 at 12:15:20 AM

We're always looking for ways to give our users the freedom and flexibility that their workflow deserves. Ever since we launched Luna on Kickstarter, we've continued to ask ourselves, “Is there more that we could be doing with Luna?”

The answer was sitting right under our noses in the form of all of the idle Macs we had laying around our offices... What if we could turn people’s e-waste into extra screen space?

Introducing Mac-to-Mac Mode in Luna Display 4.0

Our all-new Mac-to-Mac Mode allows you to use any Mac as a second display. Finally, you can give purpose to your old Macs lying around! No need to have any idle devices. The combinations are nearly endless:

  • iMac + MacBook Pro
  • MacBook + MacBook
  • Mac mini + MacBook

Minimum Compatibility Requirements

  • The Primary Mac requires macOS 10.11 El Capitan or later
  • The Secondary Mac requires macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later
  • You will need the latest version of Luna Display on all devices. Free download available here: lunadisplay.com/hello
  • Internet connection is necessary as USB is only supported for Mac-to-iPad Mode at this time

Mac-to-Mac Features

  • Trackpad support for both computers
  • Keyboard support for both computers
  • Compatible with macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later. See details below

Getting Started

If you're interested in trying this setup, here's everything you need to get started:

  1.  Primary Mac: This is the main Mac you will be using — the host Mac from which all of your programs and windows will be projected. The Primary Mac requires macOS 10.11 El Capitan or later.
  2.  Secondary Mac: This will be your extended display — the receiving Mac onto which you may drag any of your program windows. The Secondary Mac requires macOS 10.8 Mountain Lion or later.
  3.  A reliable network connection: Mac-to-Mac Mode will work whether you are working wirelessly via WiFi or tethered to your router.
  4.  Luna Hardware & Up-to-Date Apps: Along with your Luna hardware, you will need to get the latest version of each of the Luna apps (Primary Mac, Secondary Mac, and iPad App). All Mac app updates are free and are available to download at lunadisplay.com/hello. Visit the iOS App Store to update your iPad app and maintain compatibility for Mac-to-iPad Mode.

When you’re ready, you can find a complete set of instructions for getting setup here: Mac-to-Mac Mode: Using your Mac as a Second Screen

We wrapped up production ahead of schedule, and yesterday, 9,000 Mini DisplayPort Lunas arrived at our distribution center in Atlanta. Behind the scenes at the Luna product shoot

A few weeks ago, we did a photoshoot for Luna to prepare for our public launch of Luna. It was also a great way to celebrate all of the progress we’ve made on Luna in the year since our Kickstarter! Here are some behind the scenes shots from our photoshoot with our Minneapolis-based creative agency Humdinger and Sons.

Preparing for Large Mini DisplayPort Batch & Introducing Office Mode
over 5 years ago – Fri, Sep 07, 2018 at 06:05:48 PM

Hey Kickstarter community! In our last update, we announced that we were preparing to ship over 4,000 units (mostly USB-C). Now that these units have been delivered, we’ve fulfilled 60% of all Kickstarter orders. As we roll into the autumn months, we’re closing in on completing production of all Luna Display units — here’s what we have in store for the coming weeks:

Manufacturing of remaining Luna units begins this month

To fulfill the remaining 40% of Kickstarter orders, we are gearing up to manufacture a large batch of Mini DisplayPort units later this month. These units are estimated to arrive at our distribution center by the end of October, and will be shipped out to backers immediately after.

A note about Mini DisplayPort production: During testing, we ran into more challenges with the mDP design than we did with USB-C (we have to support over 70 Mac models for mDP versus only a handful of Mac models for USB-C). All design issues have since have been corrected and we are ready for a large-scale production run!

On track to fulfill all units by December 2018

Orders are being fulfilled on a rolling basis over the coming months, and all Luna Display units will be delivered by the end of December 2018. While we are unable to provide the specific date for an individual delivery, it is our top priority to get a Luna unit into your hands as soon as possible. For more information on shipments, please visit our Shipment FAQ

Luna Software Update: Introducing Office Mode

Last week, we released a software update for Luna with a new feature called Office Mode. The Office Mode feature is designed for users who commonly work in an environment where multiple people are using Luna.

With Office Mode enabled, Luna Display will no longer automatically connect to the first computer it sees on the network. Instead, you must either connect via WiFi Manual Connect or via USB. Once you connect via WiFi Manual Connect, the information is stored on the device and will automatically connect in the next session. You can learn more about how to enable Office Mode here → Enabling Office Mode

How are you using Luna? We want to know!

In an effort to better understand our users, we’d love to see how you’re using Luna — what your workspace looks like and what programs you’re using. Are you using Luna on the road? At home? At the beach? Please tag us in your photos on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)! We want to learn more about how you’re integrating Luna into your workflow.
